A Multi-Scale Model for the Intraseasonal Impact of the Diurnal Cycle over
نویسندگان
چکیده
The eastward propagating Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) typically exhibits complex behavior during its passage over the Maritime Continent, sometimes slowly propagating eastward and other times stalling and even terminating there with large amounts of rainfall. This is a huge challenge for present-day numerical models to simulate. One possible reason is the inadequate treatment of the diurnal cycle and its scale interaction with the MJO. Here these two components are incorporated into a simple self-consistent multi-scale model, which includes a model for the intraseasonal impact of the diurnal cycle and another one for the planetary/intraseasonal circulation. The latter model is forced self-consistently by eddy flux divergences of momentum and temperature from a model for the diurnal cycle with two baroclinic modes, which capture the intraseasonal impact of the diurnal cycle. The MJO is modelled as the planetary-scale circulation response to a moving heat source on the synoptic and planetary scales. The results show that the intraseasonal impact of the diurnal cycle during boreal winter tends to strengthen the westerlies (easterlies) at the lower (upper) troposphere in agreement with the observations. In addition, the temperature anomaly induced by the intraseasonal impact of the diurnal cycle can cancel that from the symmetric/asymmetric MJO with convective momentum transfer, yielding stalled or suppressed propagation of the MJO across the Maritime Continent. The simple multi-scale model should be useful for the MJO in observations or more complex numerical models. 9

A Multi-Scale Model for the Intraseasonal Impact of the Diurnal Cycle of Tropical Convection
One of the crucial features of tropical convection is the observed variability on multiple spatiotemporal scales, ranging from cumulus clouds on the daily time scale over a few kilometers to intraseasonal oscillations over planetary scales. The diurnal cycle of tropical convection is a significant process but its large-scale impact is not well understood. Here we develop a multi-scale analytic ...
متن کاملModeling Diurnal and Intraseasonal Variability of the Ocean Mixed Layer
The intraseasonal variability of SST associated with the passage of the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) is well documented; yet coupled model integrations generally underpredict the magnitude of this SST variability. Observations from the Improved Meteorological Instrument (IMET) mooring in the western Pacific during the intensive observing period (IOP) of the Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere C...
متن کاملImpact of resolving the diurnal cycle in an ocean–atmosphere GCM. Part 1: a diurnally forced OGCM
The diurnal cycle is a fundamental time scale in the climate system, at which the upper ocean and atmosphere are routinely observed to vary. Current climate models, however, are not configured to resolve the diurnal cycle in the upper ocean or the interaction of the ocean and atmosphere on these time scales. This study examines the diurnal cycle of the tropical upper ocean and its climate impac...

Diurnal air temperature modeling is a beneficial experimental and mathematical approach which can be used in many fields related to Geosciences. The modeling and spatio-temporal analysis of air Diurnal Temperature Cycle (DTC) was conducted using data obtained from 105 synoptic stations in Iran during the years 2013-2014 for the first time; the key variable for controlling the cosine term i...
متن کاملAsian summer monsoon simulated by a global cloud-system-resolving model: Diurnal to intra-seasonal variability
[1] Interaction of convection and circulation is key to the Asian summer monsoon, but difficult to represent in global models. Here we report results from simulations for the summer of 2004 by a global cloud-system-resolving model, NICAM. At both 14and 7-km horizontal resolution, NICAM simulates the observed monsoon circulation patterns, and the northward propagation of precipitation. The 7-km ...
